3DS Modding
Date
January, 2026
Key Concepts:
System Level Modification
Custom Firmware Installation
Emulation and Application Forwarding
Risk Management and Recovery
Technical Documentation
This project documents my hands-on exploration of Nintendo 3DS modding, where I installed custom firmware (CFW) to extend the system’s functionality beyond its original limitations. The goal was to better understand how consumer hardware can be modified at the system level to support homebrew applications, custom software, and enhanced user control.
Through this project, I worked with system level tools to safely modify the device, configure custom boot behavior, and manage installed applications. I explored how emulation, forwarders, and homebrew utilities integrate with the 3DS operating system, while maintaining system stability and recoverability.
A major focus of the project was documentation and repeatability recording each step, tool, and decision to ensure the process could be safely reproduced and understood. This reinforced best practices around experimentation, backups, and responsible system modification.
This project was conducted for educational and personal experimentation purposes. Please explore my Github to learn more!
